A colorful and outspoken millionaire known for his public generosity and personal frugality, Dr. Moore provided funds for building the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia. In 1982, he provided a matching grant to develop the Claude Moore Colonial Farm at Turkey Run, an 18th century working farm on 100 acres in McLean, Virginia. There, colonial period crops and planting methods are duplicated, and the farm's programs include harvest days, market fairs, and opportunities for children and adults to learn 18th century skills. The farm is owned by the United States Park Service and is the only community-operated park in the United States park system.
